How to Choose a 24V LED Driver

Every 24V LED light needs a driver. Choosing the right one comes down to four checks: the pin type of the lights, the total wattage, how the lights will be controlled, and where the driver will sit. This guide walks through each one using the Sensio Titan range.

What does an LED driver do?

A driver converts mains power to the 24V that LED lights and strips need. You will also see it called an LED transformer or LED power supply. Our drivers have distribution ports, so several lights can plug into one driver.

Step 1: match the pin type

  • 2-pin for single colour and TrioTone® (colour selectable) lighting.
  • 4-pin for CCT (colour adjustable) lighting.
  • 6-pin for RGBCCT colour changing strip, such as Flux and Polar RGBCCT.

The pin type is shown on each light's product page.

Step 2: add up the wattage

Add together the wattage of every light and the total length of strip that will run from the driver, then choose a driver rated higher than that total. Our drivers run from 6W to 150W. The quickest way is the driver calculator, which works it out for you.

Step 3: choose how the lights will be controlled

Driver Pins Control
Titan+™ 2-pin Plug-in sensors (PIR, IR, switch and door). Dimmable only when paired with a sensor. Not for use with a wall dimmer.
Titan™ Dimmable 2-pin Wall dimmable from a mains dimmer switch, with a 5% to 100% dimming range.
Titan™ Smart Kinetic 2-pin Link Sensio app, Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, and the wireless Titan Kinetic Switch.
Titan™ Smart Kinetic CCT 4-pin As above, for CCT lighting, including colour changing and schedules.
Titan™ Smart RGBCCT 6-pin App and voice control for Flux and Polar RGBCCT strip.
Modus™ Plug-in 30W Single colour or TrioTone® Plugs straight into a socket for easy retrofit. Works with Affinity magnetic track.

Watch: choosing and installing a Titan driver

Using a wall dimmer? Watch the Titan Dimmable driver installation and setup guide. For app and switch control, watch the Titan Smart Kinetic setup guide.

Step 4: check where the driver will go

Titan drivers are a slim 16mm deep, so they fit behind kickboards and above wall units. For bathrooms, use the Titan IP44 Driver, a 30W IP44 rated driver with an IP44 connection ready to plug and play. Titan drivers come with a 2m mains cable; a cable with plug is sold separately. Connection to the mains should be carried out by a qualified electrician.

Frequently asked questions

What size LED driver do I need?

One rated higher than the total wattage of the lights and strip on it. Use the driver calculator to work it out.

Is an LED driver the same as an LED transformer?

The terms are often used for the same thing: a unit that converts mains power to the low voltage LED lights need. Sensio lighting runs at 24V, so use a 24V driver with the matching pin type.

Can I use a wall dimmer with LED lights?

Only with a driver designed for it. The Titan Dimmable driver works with a mains wall dimmer. Titan+ and the smart drivers must not be used with a wall dimmer; they dim through sensors, the app or the Kinetic Switch.

Can one driver run several lights?

Yes. Titan drivers have built-in distribution ports, and port expanders add more connections, as long as the total wattage stays within the driver's rating.

Which driver should I use in a bathroom?

The Titan IP44 Driver, which is IP44 rated for bathroom installation. See our bathroom zones guide.

Can I control the lights from my phone?

Yes, with a Titan Smart Kinetic or Smart RGBCCT driver and the Link Sensio app, or by voice with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant.
