LED Coving Lighting Ideas: Ceilings, Coves and Bulkheads

Polar X Pro adjustable white COB LED strip installed and lit

Short answer: LED coving lighting hides a run of LED strip behind a coving, ceiling cove or bulkhead so you see a soft wash of light on the ceiling or wall, not the strip itself. For the smoothest result, use a COB strip that shows no LED dots, run it at 24V so long runs stay bright to the far end, hold it in a profile where it needs support or aiming, and choose warm white for living rooms and bedrooms. Size the driver to the total wattage and keep it somewhere you can reach.

Cove and bulkhead lighting is one of the simplest ways to make a ceiling feel higher and a room feel calmer, because the light bounces off a surface rather than shining straight at you. This guide covers ideas for ceilings, coves and bulkheads, and the practical points that make the difference: hiding the strip, getting an even line, colour temperature, and planning the runs and drivers. Connecting drivers to the mains must always be done by a qualified electrician.

Our strip and profile pages describe them mainly for kitchens, furniture and media walls rather than coving specifically, so if your design is unusual, ask our technical team to check it before you buy.

LED coving lighting ideas

Uplight a ceiling cove

The classic look: a strip sits on top of a coving or a ledge set a little below the ceiling, facing up, so the light spreads across the ceiling from the edge of the room. Only the glow shows. A COB strip such as Polar X gives one continuous line of light with no visible LED dots and a 180 degree beam, so the wash on the ceiling stays smooth.

Light the edge of a bulkhead or dropped ceiling

A bulkhead or dropped section of ceiling is often built over a kitchen run, a bed wall or a media wall. A line of light set into its edge or underside picks out the shape. Strips such as Radiant X and Razor X Pro 2mm push-fit into a recess or saw cut with no adhesive and bend around corner recesses, which suits a crisp line in a board edge.

A floating ceiling or raft

Light hidden around the edge of a raised panel or raft makes it look as if it is floating. The same rule applies: keep the strip out of sight and let the light wash the ceiling around the raft.

Curved coves

For a curved cove or a rounded bulkhead, Flex with Polar X Pro is a flexible silicone profile with an adjustable white COB strip already built in. It comes on a coiled reel, cuts to any length, and fits surface mounted or recessed with VHB tape backing.

Media walls and alcoves

Coves and bulkheads often go hand in hand with a built-in media wall. For ideas around the TV recess, shelves and alcoves, see our media wall lighting ideas.

Hiding the strip

  • Keep it out of the line of sight. Set the strip behind the lip of the coving or bulkhead so that, from anywhere in the room, you see the light and not the strip.
  • Leave room for the light to spread. A strip pressed hard into a corner tends to give a bright stripe. A little space between the strip and the surface it lights gives a softer wash.
  • Use a profile to hold and aim the strip. A profile gives the strip a straight, rigid base. Angled profiles such as Beam aim the light, and Beam is compatible with all flexible strips. Surface mounted profiles such as Fino fix straight on, and recessed profiles such as Linia sit flush in a routed groove. Adapt is made for corners. See all LED profiles and our guide to what an LED profile is.

Getting a smooth line: diffusion

Strip on a ceiling is seen from a distance and at an angle, so dots and hot spots show up more than they do inside a cupboard. You have two ways to avoid them:

  • COB strip. COB (chip on board) strips such as Polar X and Polar X Pro give a continuous line with no visible LED dots, so they do not need a cover.
  • A diffuser. Standard SMD strip has individual LEDs, so use it in a profile with a diffuser cover. Fino has a PC diffuser that hides the LED points, and Zella fully diffuses the light for a soft, even glow.

Read COB vs SMD LED strip for the full comparison. All our strips are CRI 90+, so colours on walls and ceilings look true.

Choosing the colour temperature

Cove lighting is mostly background light used in the evening, so warm white suits living rooms and bedrooms. Natural or cool white suits kitchens, workspaces and hallways where you want a crisper look.

  • One fixed white: Polar X comes in warm white (3000K), natural white (4000K) or cool white.
  • Adjustable white: Polar X Pro moves smoothly from warm white (2700K) to cool white (6500K), so the same cove can be cosy at night and brighter by day.

For more on Kelvin and which white to pick, see our colour temperature guide.

24V runs and drivers

Coving runs are long, often right around a room, so voltage and power planning matter.

  • Use 24V strip. Most of our strips run at 24V. Polar X and Polar X Pro run up to 25m at 24V without fading, so long runs stay bright to the far end.
  • Plan the feed points. Polar X and Polar X Pro have pre-soldered 2.5m driver connection cables at each end. An extra driver connection cable, sold separately, lets you use the offcuts.
  • Size the driver. Add up the wattage of every run on the driver and choose a 24V driver rated above that total. Our LED strip calculator works out the length, watts and driver size for you, and our guide to what size LED driver you need explains the maths.
  • Match the driver to the strip. Adjustable white strip such as Polar X Pro needs a CCT receiver or a Titan Smart Kinetic CCT driver. See all 24V LED drivers.
  • Hide the driver, but keep it reachable. Put it in a void or cupboard with an access panel, never sealed behind plasterboard.
  • Use a qualified electrician. The low voltage strip plugs into the driver, but connecting the driver to the mains must be done by a qualified electrician.

Dimming and control

Cove lighting is often used at low levels, so plan for dimming from the start. Polar X dims with a single colour receiver or a Sensio smart driver. Polar X Pro works with a CCT receiver or a Titan Smart Kinetic CCT driver for both dimming and colour temperature. See all lighting sensors and controls.

Coving lighting in a bathroom

Standard strips such as Polar X are IP20, for dry areas only. In a bathroom, use Polar X IP65, which is suitable for zones 1 and 2 provided the connections are sealed and the driver is fitted outside zone 1 (zone 2 is fine, for example the Titan IP44 driver). See IP ratings explained and our bathroom zones guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is LED coving lighting?

A run of LED strip hidden behind a coving, ceiling cove or bulkhead so that it lights the ceiling or wall with a soft, indirect glow.

Which LED strip is best for coving?

A 24V COB strip, because it gives a continuous line with no visible dots and keeps long runs bright. Polar X comes in warm, natural or cool white, and Polar X Pro adjusts from warm to cool white.

Do I need a profile for coving lighting?

Not always. A COB strip does not need a cover to hide dots, but a profile gives the strip a straight base and can aim the light. Standard SMD strip looks best in a profile with a diffuser.

What colour temperature is best for cove lighting?

Warm white for living rooms and bedrooms, natural or cool white for kitchens and workspaces. Adjustable white strip lets you change it whenever you like.

How long a run of LED strip can I use for coving?

Polar X and Polar X Pro run up to 25m at 24V without fading. Size the driver to the total wattage, using our LED strip calculator.

Where should the driver go?

Somewhere hidden but reachable, such as a void or cupboard with an access panel. Connecting it to the mains must be done by a qualified electrician.
