Plug-and-Play Furniture Lighting Systems: How They Work and What to Look For

Polar X LED strip being cut to length

Quick answer: A plug-and-play furniture lighting system is a set of low voltage lights, LED strip, drivers, sensors and leads that all plug together, so you can light cabinets, wardrobes, shelves and plinths without soldering or wiring each light. In the Sensio system, every light and strip plugs into a 24V Titan driver with built-in distribution ports, sensors plug into the driver's switch port, and only the driver's own mains connection needs an electrician.

Kitchen, bedroom and furniture makers want the same thing from lighting: lights that fit quickly, look tidy and work first time. That is what a plug-and-play system is for. This guide explains how these systems work, the four main types you will come across, and what to check before you choose one.

How a plug-and-play furniture lighting system works

Every system has the same four parts.

  1. The driver. An LED driver converts mains power to the low voltage the lights need, 24V for most Sensio lights. Our Titan drivers have built-in distribution ports, so several lights plug into one driver, and they are only 16mm deep, so they fit behind kickboards and above wall units.
  2. The lights. Under cabinet spotlights, plinth lights, LED strip in a profile, or wardrobe and shelf lights. Each one has its own lead that plugs into the driver.
  3. The leads and connectors. Joining clips, corner connectors, interconnecting leads and extension leads take the light around corners, across gaps and back to the driver. See LED strip connectors explained.
  4. The control. Door, PIR, hand wave (IR) and touch sensors, a push switch, a remote, or an app. On the Titan+ driver, a sensor plugs into the driver's dedicated switch control port.

The rule that makes it all work: the strip, its connectors and the driver must all have the same pin type. 2-pin is for single colour and TrioTone®, 4-pin for adjustable white (CCT) and 6-pin for colour changing (RGBCCT).

The four types of furniture lighting system

Type How it fits Best for Sensio example
24V driver system Lights, strip and sensors plug into a driver with distribution ports. No soldering on the 24V side. Most kitchens, wardrobes and furniture, where you want several lights, sensors and control from one driver Titan drivers with plug-in lights, strip and sensors
Magnetic track A slim track is cut to length and fixed in place. Spotlights, strip and controls click on magnetically and can be moved later. Shelving, display and furniture where the layout may change Affinity™ Magnetic Track
Mains-linked lights Lights run straight from the mains with no separate driver, and link together with joining cables. Simple under cabinet runs on a wall switch Connex™ (wired by an electrician)
Cut-to-length service Strip and profile arrive cut to your lengths, pre-soldered and kitted with the right driver. Repeat installs, hotels, shopfits and furniture production TrueFIT

What to look for in a furniture lighting system

  • One driver, many lights. Check how many ports the driver has. For example, a Titan+ 6W driver has 4 ports and the 15W, 30W and 60W versions have 6. When you run out, a port expander adds more, as long as the total wattage stays within the driver's rating.
  • A driver that fits the furniture. A slim driver hides behind a kickboard or above a wall unit. Titan drivers are 16mm deep.
  • Sensors that plug in. Door sensors for cupboards and wardrobes, PIR for plinths and walk-in spaces, hand wave for worktops. Wireless sensors help where there is no cable route.
  • Connectors with no soldering. Clips, corners and leads matched to each strip. Our Universal joining clip, corner and T-junction connectors fit Polar X, Primo X, Sigma and Polar X Pro.
  • Light quality. Every Sensio light is CRI 90+, so colours and worktops look natural, and COB strips such as Polar X give a continuous line with no visible dots.
  • A clear choice of control. A wall dimmer needs the Titan Dimmable driver. Never use a Titan+ or Titan Smart Kinetic driver with a wall dimmer. For app and voice control, use a Titan Smart Kinetic driver with the Link Sensio app, Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant, and the battery-free Kinetic switch.
  • A system you can buy in one place. We can only guarantee Sensio lights working with Sensio drivers, dimmers and sensors, so keep each installation in one system.
  • A long guarantee. Sensio lighting comes with a 7 year guarantee. See our guarantee.

Choosing the right Sensio system

  • A full kitchen: Titan+ driver, under cabinet lights or LED strip in a profile, plinth lights and a PIR or door sensor. Size the driver with the LED strip calculator.
  • Wardrobes and cupboards: strip or wardrobe lights on a Titan+ driver with a door sensor. See wardrobe lighting.
  • Shelving and display: Affinity™ Magnetic Track, so spotlights and strip can be moved without new wiring.
  • Smart homes: a Titan Smart Kinetic driver for app, voice and wireless switch control.
  • Volume and repeat projects: TrueFIT, so every run arrives cut, soldered and ready to fit.

Frequently asked questions

What is a plug-and-play lighting system?

A set of lights, drivers, sensors and leads designed to plug together without soldering. On a 24V Sensio system, everything on the low voltage side plugs in, and only the driver's mains connection needs a qualified electrician.

Do I need an electrician to fit furniture lighting?

Connecting Sensio 24V lights to the driver is plug and play. Any work on mains wiring must be carried out by a qualified electrician. Where there is a socket nearby, the driver can plug in with the Driver Lead with Plug.

How many lights can I run from one driver?

Add up the wattage of every light and every metre of strip, and choose a driver rated higher than the total. If you are close to the limit, go up a size. Read what size LED driver do I need?

Can I mix lights from different brands on one driver?

We don't test our products with other manufacturers' products, so we can only guarantee Sensio lights working with Sensio drivers, dimmers and sensors.

Can furniture lighting switch on automatically?

Yes. Door sensors switch lights on when a door opens, PIR sensors react to movement, and hand wave sensors give touch-free switching. See which LED light sensor do you need?

Can I have LED strip cut to length for me?

Yes. Our TrueFIT service cuts, solders and kits LED strip and profiles to your lengths, with a 48-hour turnaround.
